Compassion education

Cultivating compassion in educational settings, and creating the kind of culture where it is a norm of student and staff behavior, may seem at first a noble ideal: a nice-to-have, something to be undertaken only when all other priorities are met. Yet we now have the evidence to show that a school’s ability to foster real learning, indeed to fulfill its fundamental purpose, depends on its ability to do just that. More and more schools and educational organizations/groups are acting on this evidence and creating compassion-filled learning environments. Students and adults alike thrive when their social and emotional needs are met, when they feel a sense of belonging, when they feel their voices are welcomed and heard.

Think Equal

THINK EQUAL

The Global Charter has formally endorsed Think Equal as one of its education programs. Think Equal is one of the most recent and comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks with tangible resources for the development of integrated pedagogies. These pedagogies specifically focus on the process by which children thrive, rather than solely on processes of accumulation of knowledge. In Australia Think Equal has been part of a Randomised Control Trial that has found the children who went through the 30 week Think Equal program in early childhood centres in Melbourne and Brisbane achieved positive social and emotion awareness and regulation changes in children. This evaluation found that participation in the program supported the children in better managing their emotions when connecting to others, to more deeply engage with the diversity of other children within their group, so they can indeed be better resourced to ‘think and to act’ equal.

Compassion Integrity Training

CIT is a resiliency-informed program that cultivates human values as skills, so we can thrive as individuals, and a society, within a healthy environment.  By learning skills to calm our bodies and mind, becoming more emotionally aware, learning to practice compassion for ourselves and others, as well as engaging with compassion in complex systems, we can build towards compassionate integrity: the ability to live one’s life in accordance with one’s values with a recognition of common humanity, our basic orientation to kindness and reciprocity. It is based on cutting-edge developments in the fields of neuroscience, psychology, trauma-informed care, peace and conflict studies, and contemplative science. CIT focuses on three domains: beginning with a focus on the self (Self-cultivation), then move to others (Relating to Others), and finally to a systems-perspective, meaning the larger networks in which we exist. Additionally, each module in CIT is intended to allow participants to progress through three levels of understanding: received knowledge, critical insight, and embodied understanding. In CIT, it is important that knowledge not remain at an intellectual level; to be effective, it must lead to realizations and lasting changes in behavior. Knowledge becomes transformative when it moves from head to heart to hand. Therefore, each session has both content and practice learning objectives.
